“The Takedown”: EKS Wrestling Recap of Sub-State and State Preview

Eastern Kansas Sports is proud to present a new weekly wrestling feature: “The Takedown”.

Each week we will recap noteworthy performances from the Eastern Kansas Sports coverage area.

This feature includes both boy’s and girl’s wrestlers.

Julian Long placed 4th, Josh Kozminski placed 5th, Xander Finn placed 5th and Tristan Mercado placed 2nd. Julian and Tristan will compete at the Boys State tournament this Friday at Hartman Arena. 


Johnny Cash Thomas (11) – Substate Runner-up @ 145 lbs.

Thomas Knudsen (12) – Substate 3rd Place @ 152 lbs.

Bobby Thomas (12) – Substate Runner-up @ 160 lbs.

Blake Jouret (11) – Substate Champion @ 170 lbs.

Blake will enter the state tournament with a record of 32-0. His path through the substate tournament included a fall, techfall, and an 11-2 major decision over the #3 Ranked wrestler in 6A in the Finals.

Zack Leskovac (12) – Substate Champion @ 182 lbs.

Zack heads to Wichita with a record of 30-1 after pinning his way through substate – including a fall over the #6          Ranked wrestler in 6A in the finals.

Ty Knudsen (12) – Substate 4th Place @ 195 lbs.

Bonner Springs HS – Bonner Springs qualified 7 boys and 2 girls for the state tournaments this weekend, including 3 freshman.  We had 2 champions, Cruz Lara and Olivia Stean, both will enter the state tournament with #1 rankings. Freshman Ethan Cook at 113 finished as a runner-up, losing to former Bonner Springs wrestler and training partner Eddie Hughart of Mill Valley.    Senior Trevor Andrew will make the trip to the 5A state tournament for the 2nd straight year and will look to end his career on the podium.  Junior Jace Tapia will also wrestle in his 2nd state tournament with a 4th place finish.  Senior Cruz Lara will be looking for his 2nd state championship after missing his junior year to a season ending shoulder injury.  Senior Cassius Vanderpool is seeking his 3rd state medal in arguably the toughest weight class in the entire state.  He has 2 season wins over returning state champion Johnny Akin of St. Thomas Aquinas.  Junior Shane Daniels will wrestle in his 2nd state championship, looking for his 1st state medal.  Junior Tony Caballero avenged an earlier season loss to Danny Carrol of St. Thomas Aquinas in the sub state semi-finals to punch his 2nd straight ticket to the state tournament.

Mill Valley HS – Captured the De Soto Sub-State Team Championship with the following individual results:

Alec Younggren, 220 lbs., Louisburg HS – Alec cruised to a sub-state championship with three pins, spending less than 5 minutes on the mat all day. A week ago at the 4A Regional 3 tournament at Jeff West, he earned his 100th career victory with a first-period pin over #3 ranked Toby Thomas of Baldwin. He is currently 35-0 with 23 pins and 1 major decision. As a sophomore at Olathe South, he was 1-2 at 6A State at 220 lbs., and as a junior he bounced back from an 8-7 loss in the 6A state semifinals against the eventual state champion to finish in 3rd place at 220 lbs. He is currently ranked #2 in Kansas 4A. Alec plans to attend Fort Hays State University next year and play football for Coach Chris Brown. 

Cade Holtzen 132 lbs., Louisburg HS- Cade won the sub-state championship in Chanute with a 4-1 decision over #3 ranked Coby Burchett of Fort Scott. Cade also surpassed the Louisburg High School career wins record by earning his 151st victory in the semifinals. The previous record was held by 3x state champion Austin Hood, set in 2012. Cade is 35-1 so far this season with 17 pins, 2 technical falls, and 2 major decisions. He placed 6th at 113 lbs. in 2018, was 2-2 at 113 lbs. in 2019, 5th at 126 lbs. in 2020, and is currently ranked #2 in Kansas 4A. Cade is an honors student with a 4.0 GPA, a member of National Honor Society, a member of the KWCA Academic All-State 1st Team, and a recipient of the NWCA / USMC High School Character and Leadership All-American Award. He plans to attend the University of Nebraska next year to pursue a major in engineering. 

Chanute HS – The defending 4A State Champions are well represented heading into state. Qualifiers for the Blue Comets include: Kolton Misener, Trent Clements, Trey Dillow, Colton Seely, Ty Leedy, Brayden Dillow, and Nathan Cunningham. Trent Clements was selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestling in the Chanute Sub-State with head coach Andy Albright selected as the Most Outstanding Coach.

Ryan Owens 120 lbs., Louisburg HS – Ryan finished his career as a Wildcat by placing 6th at 120 lbs. at the 4A Sub-State 2 tournament in Chanute. Ryan is a 3x state qualifier, placing 4th at 120 lbs. in Kansas 4A in 2020. He nearly cracked the LHS Wrestling “Century Club” by earning 98 career wins. He is currently the school record-holder for most tech falls in a career (tied with Austin Hood with 13). He finished the season with a 25-7 record (10 pins, 7 techs, and 1 major decision). He is undecided on college, but has been considering Coe College or Cornell next year. He is a KWCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention winner in 2020. 


Bryce Eck, Uniontown HS – Bryce Eck formally Ranked #3 in the state, 34-2 sub-state champion and outstanding wrestler of the Marion sub state.

Buddy Claibourn, 182lbs., Fredonia HS –  stayed perfect 20-0 on the year and became the sub-state champion at 182 defeating the #6 ranked Silver Lake wrestler in the finals at Marion on Saturday. 

Daigan Kruger, 170lbs., Silver Lake HS – Daigan Kruger is a Junior with a record of 47-1 with 42 wins coming by pin.  His 42 pins is a new Kansas record for pins in a season.  Daigan is the district champion, regional champion and sub-state champion.  Kruger, who has been limited in his first two years of high school wrestling due to injuries,  was  a state qualifier as a freshman but his sophomore season ended due to injury.  

Justin Rakestraw, 132lbs., Silver Lake HS – Justin Rakestraw has a record of 16-5.  Justin was injured for the first half of the season but has come on strong for the Eagles lately.  Justin was the district champion, regional runner up and sub-state runner up.  Justin was a state qualifier last season.

Kai Allen, 138lbs., Silver Lake HS – Kai Allen is a senior at 138. His record for the season is 37-3 with 25 wins coming by pin.  This season Kai is the district champion, regional champion, and now sub-state champion.  Kai is a 3 time state placer finishing as a freshman Kia placed third, as a sophomore he was the state champion and last season he was the state champion runner up.

Mitch Budke, 160lbs., Chase County HS – Mitch Budke who defeated the number three ranked and undefeated wrestler at 160 by fall in his opening round.  After a 1-0 loss in the semifinals he pinned Daulton Hilyard of Douglass in the consolation semifinals to qualify for the state tournament.  Mitch lost to Lowe, the State’s top ranked wrestler at 160 in the consolation finals.

Preston Gillen 195 lbs., Silver Lake HS – Preston Gillen has a record of 39-7 with 29 wins coming by pin.  Preston is the district champion, regional champion and sub-state runner up. 

Tristan VandeVelde, 182 lbs., Silver Lake HS – Tristan VandeVelde has a record of 42-5 with 30 wins coming by pin.  Tristan was the district champion, regional champion and sub-state runner up.  VandeVelde was a state qualifier last season as well.

The Silver Lake Eagles wrestling team had 6 wrestlers compete at the sub-state tournament with 5 of those wrestlers making it to the championship finals.  Silver Lake was the sub-state overall team champion.  Silver Lake scores 97 points to win the Championship.


Alaina Johnston, 115lbs., Shawnee Mission West – Alaina won the D1 sub-state tournament on Friday. She is now 27-1 on the season. First-round she beat Rebeccah Jones from Pittsburg 6-0. In the semi-finals, she avenged her only loss of the season by winning 6-0 over #3 ranked Molly Busenitz from Shawnee Heights. In the finals, she won by fall in 1:16 over #4 ranked Shayne Miles from Washburn Rural. Alaina is the first female from Shawnee Mission West to qualify for the girl’s state tournament.

Bonner Springs HS – Chloie Knapp at 155 and Olivia Stean at 170, both freshman.  Chloie finished 4th at sub-state and Olivia defeated the #2 and #3 ranked girls to win her sub-state bracket.  Both are the 1st girls state qualifiers in Bonner Springs wrestling history.  

Hannah Jackson, Leavenworth HS – placed 2nd. She will compete at the Girls State Tournament this Thursday at Hartman Arena. 

Hannah Reddick, 120 lbs., Fredonia HS –  Hannah Reddick at 120 took down the #4 ranked girl from silver lake on her way to a fourth place finish. Layla Tindle continued her quiet dismantling of the 126 lbs weight class, also taking down the #4 ranked girl and improving her record at 18-3 with two losses coming via Knecht from Paola and 1 loss to Kessler from Cherryvale at 132. She finished second again to Knecht on Friday.

Nicole Redmond, 120 lbs., Olathe South HS – Nicole continued her strong Freshmen campaign last weekend, recording two first period falls in route to the Sub-State Finals. In the Championship bout, she downed the #2 Ranked Wrestler in Girls D1, 9-3.

Sara Lake, KC-Piper HS – Senior Sara Lake finishes as the Sub-State wrestler of the year, pinning all 3 of her opponents to claim the sub-state title and improve to 22-0.  

Silver Lake HS – Silver Lake had 5 girls compete at the sub-state tournament and had 2 sub-state placers.  Senior Ellington Hogle (33-4) placed 3rd at the 132 pound weight class.  Ellington has 26 wins by pin this year. She was a state qualifier last season also. Ellington was the district runner up and placed 3rd at regionals.   Freshman Hailey Horton (34-11) also placed 3rd at the sub-state tournament at 155 pound weight class.  Horton has 27 wins by pin this year.  Hailey was the district champion and regional runner up.
