After an intense day of competition at the west region sub state tournament , tribe wrestling qualified five wrestlers to the state championships at Hartman arena in Park City. Those making the trip this Saturday are Jantzen Borge, Jameal Agnew, Easton Taylor, Blaisen Bammes and Damian Ilalio.

Many coaches spoke of how tuff the west region was because eight of the top ten teams, in the state rankings were competing in one gym at Wichita Heights high school. With only the top four wrestlers qualify, that would leave ranked wrestlers and returning state medal winners from last year out of the state tournament. The top schools, in ranking order are Washburn Rural, Dodge City, Derby, Lawrence Free State, Garden City, Haysville Campus, Junction City and Manhattan. The only ranked teams in the east region are number five Olathe North and number eight Olathe East. The Manhattan coaches agree the podium at state will be dominated by the west. While there are good wrestlers in the east, the level of competition in the west will prepare those west athletes to handle the intense and stressful situations that arise at the state tourney.

One stressful moment Saturday stared straight at Jantzen Borge, Manhattan’s 113 pounde wrestler in the consolation semifinals. With a win Jantzen would have him returning to state, but Jantzen was down early to Haysville Campus wrestler Eric Spangler. Borge was on his back in the second period, fighting to avoid being pinned. While working is way out from under Spangler, an opening came and Borge capitalized on it. He rolled Spangler to his back where seconds later the referee slapped the mat and Jantzen won by pin and would be returning to state. Last year he came up one win short of the podium and he looks to make his way this year.

The tournament did wrestle out to sixth place in case a wrestler who did qualify was unable to attend state. Manhattan had two wrestlers competing for fifth, Tucker Brunner and Devin Seibert. Brunner picked up a win for fifth while Seibert had a rematch from an earlier round but wasn’t able to get a win and brought home sixth.

Washburn Rural took home the team title with 195 points followed by Dodge City with 160 points and Lawrence Free State taking third with 101 points. Manhattan came away with sixth scoring 82 points while Junction City took fourth with 94.5.
