“The Takedown”: EKS Wrestling Recap for Regionals

Eastern Kansas Sports is proud to present a new weekly wrestling feature: “The Takedown”.

Each week we will recap noteworthy performances from the Eastern Kansas Sports coverage area.

This feature includes both boy’s and girl’s wrestlers.

Blue Valley Southwest – Brett Umentum (145 lbs.) won Regional Championship and named Outstanding Wrestler.

Shawnee Mission North – Two wrestlers qualified for 6A Sub-State at Olathe North next weekend; Freshman 170 – Jack Taylor (3rd Place) and Senior 285 – Jasper Dewey (Champion)


St. Thomas Aquinas – Strong showing from the Saint Thomas Aquinas wrestlers as 11 Saints qualified for Sub-State next weekend. STA finished as Regional runner-ups as a team.

Baldwin – Toby Thomas, senior at 220 lbs. Thomas had been out since Jan. 9 due to injury, and his first tournament back he found himself in a tough 220 bracket that included two ranked wrestlers and two more with 20+ wins on the season. He won two tough matches to earn his way to the finals, knocking off a #1 seed along the way. He finished 2nd and is now 21-2 on the season. He has 90 career wins as a Bulldog and is a returning state qualifier. Of his 21 wins this season, 11 are by fall. He has signed to accept a scholarship to play football at Baker University next fall.


Chase County –

Perry Lecompton – Hayden Robb (14-0) continues his undefeated streak with three more first period pins this weekend. He is currently 14-0 with 14 pins. He was District and Regional champion. He is currently the #1 ranked heavyweight in 4A. 

Thad Metcalfe (26-4) had a big weekend on the mat. He went 3-0 with two pins and a major victory including a pin in the finals.

Mason Bahnmaier (23-10) placed 4th place at Regionals this weekend. He went 2-2 on the day with a huge win over a opponent that had beaten him twice this season. 

Gavin Monaghan (19-7) placed 4th at Regionals as well he lost to the #1, and the #4 ranked kids in 4A. He went 2-2 on the day. 


Baldwin – Brianna Mitchell, freshman at 101 lbs. Mitchell got a revenge win for a Regional championship at Rossville on Saturday. It was her 19th win on the season and she has 13 of those wins by fall. It was also her first tournament championship. She now advances to Sub-State next week at Anderson County this Friday.

Blue Valley Southwest – Hannah Glynn (126 lbs.) won Regional Championship and named Outstanding Wrestler.

KC-Piper – Senior Sara Lake won her Class 5A Regional improving to 19-0 on the season heading to Sub-State.

Rossville – Keera Lacock places first at the regional tournament record of 18-3. Going into Sub-State with some very high hopes and looking at going to state and making some history this year. 

Kendra Hurla places first at the regional tournament this weekend also. Has a record or 18-1 going into Sub-State as top seed is looking good for her too. These 2 girls as doing amazing this first year of wrestling for girls and they are looking at making some history at Rossville High School.
