“The Takedown”: EKS Wrestling Recap for 1/25-1/30

Eastern Kansas Sports is proud to present a new weekly wrestling feature: “The Takedown”.

Each week we will recap noteworthy performances from the Eastern Kansas Sports coverage area.

This feature includes both boy’s and girl’s wrestlers.

Angel Gallardo, KC-JC Harmon HS – Angel Gallardo of Harmon High School has improved his record to 7-0 with 7 pins for his senior campaign.  This week, JC Harmon will battle Shawnee Mission Northwest and Olathe West on Wednesday.

Caleb Streeter, 138 lbs., Lawrence-Free State HS – As a team, the Fire Birds Wrestling team ended the regular season 20-0 on Saturday. Caleb Streeter captured his 100th career victory.

Hayden Mills, 126 lbs., Blue Valley Southwest HS – Hayden is undefeated on the season; a two-time State Champ; ranked #2 in 5A and #4 in All-Class.  This past weekend he bear Cael Keck from Park Hill High School in Missouri who ranked #1 in Missouri and is also nationally ranked.

Mack Hubbel, 195 lbs., Blue Valley Southwest HS – Mack has just two losses on the season; a returned State Placer; ranked #2 in 5A and #4 in All-Class; and has signed to wrestle at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.  This past weekend he beat Creed Webster from Mid-Buchanan High School who is ranked #1 in Missouri.

Shawnee Mission North HS – Shawnee Mission North Wrestling Team went 1 – 3 at the Extremely tough North Invitational.  Leading the team and going 3 – 1 on the day was Jasper Dewey.  He will lead his team one more time this Wednesday at Home for Senior Night against Shawnee Mission South in the Field House.  After that, the Indians prepare for Regionals which will be on Friday the 12th at Blue Valley West.  The top four placers will qualify for Sub-State competition.

Shawnee Heights HS – Both Brock Ferguson and Caden Walker picked up their 100th High School Win this week, as Juniors. It’s a rare feat to hit 100 and even bigger to do it as a Junior.

Brock hit 100 on Wednesday and Caden picked his up on Saturday.

The Shawnee Heights girls ended their regular season with an 11-0 dual record while the boys finished with a 31-1 dual record.

Josh Broyles, 145 lbs., Baldwin HS – Baldwin senior Josh Broyles (145 lbs) had a big week, going 8-0 and improving his record to 25-9. Broyles also is nearing the century mark for his career, as he sits at 98 wins. He also won our home BIT tournament with an undefeated record. Broyles is a 2x state qualifier and two-year team captain for the Bulldogs. Broyles has moved into 20th on the BHS all-time wins list.

GIRLS

Audrey Darnell, 138 lbs., Baldwin HS – Baldwin sophomore Audrey Darnell (138 lbs) went 6-0 this week to improve her season record to 21-4. Darnell picked up a revenge win over a Holton wrestler ranked above her in the state poll. She also went undefeated in the BIT Girls Quad duals, a meet that featured the #1 and #3 ranked teams in Div. 1. Darnell is currently ranked 5th in the Div. II poll as the team prepares for Districts this Friday at Burlingame. Of her 21 wins this year, 19 are by fall. Her career record so far at BHS now 45-13 overall.

Makayla Rivera, 235 lbs., Olathe West HS – Makayla continues to dominate all competition, even ranked wrestlers. On Friday, Makayla went 4-0 at the Baldwin Invitational, beating the #4 wrestler in Division I and the #4 wrestler in Division II. She is currently 19-0 on the season. 

Zahra Andela, 191 lbs., Olathe West HS –  Zahra has really improved over the course of the season. Slowly earning herself a ranking among state competitors and finding ways to beat ranked opponents. This past Friday, at the Baldwin Invitational, Zahra beat last year’s 235lb state champ, senior Dajia Anderson of Washburn Rural.
