On Tuesday, the Chanute Blue Comets’ girls’ basketball team played against the Pittsburg Purple Dragons. Chanute took the 55-48 win. Pittsburg was led by 25 points and 15 rebounds from Madden Petty and 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks from Ela Hendrickson. The Comets saw 28 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals from Mattilyn Cranor.
“[From Cranor,] I saw the kid that we’ve been waiting for. She’s had this potential and I think tonight she was poised, she was under control, and she’s hard to guard. She’s a strong quick kid and when she’s playing within herself like that she’s going to be a load for anybody,” Chanute’s head coach Dustin Fox said.
In this game Chanute was dominated on the boards. In both halves separately, the Purple Dragons had more rebounds than the Blue Comets had in the entire game. However, Chanute
was able to make Pitt turn the ball over quite a bit, racking up 9 steals as a team.
One surprising turn of events was the play of Kori Babcock. Chanute’s 1,000-point Club member, only put up 12 points in the game but facilitated well especially to Cranor.
“[From Babcock,] I saw a kid that knows the defense is always wrong. They put so much attention on her and she’s like ‘That’s fine. I trust my teammates and I’m gonna make plays for my teammates.’ Then she finishes with a double-double, with 12 points and 6 assists. It’s not about scoring for her, it’s about making plays,” Fox said, “A lot of times we need her to score but tonight when they put so much attention on her, she was able to understand that and find the people who were open.”
