The Chanute Blue Comets’ boys’ basketball team returned to play after a quarantine hiatus, facing the Pittsburg Purple Dragons on Tuesday. Chanute won the contest 66-58 behind Kam Koester’s 23 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. The Purple Dragons saw Javon Grant put up 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists.
“Overall, it was a good team effort. We had a lot of guys who rebounded together, we had guys who handled the pressure a little bit more and we’re still improving in every area where we need to improve with our young guards and we improved there for sure. It was just a great team effort all around,” Chanute’s head coach Devon Crabtree said.
This game was high paced through and through. Koester and Grant going back and forth, as well as Chanute’s Carter Coombs finding 16 points and Pittsburg’s Malakai Courtney scoring 15. Chanute made a big run in the 4th quarter on the back of Grant just falling apart scoring-wise. The Purple Dragons just weren’t quite able to come back, with Chanute winning 66-58.
This year, Chanute’s Garrett Almond has been putting up assist numbers at a much higher level than he has in previous seasons. In Tuesday’s game he had 7 assists to go with his 15 points and 7 rebounds.
“[Almond’s] distributing and doing a good job. Teams have to really focus on him and it’s giving opportunities to other guys,” Crabtree said.
