Manhattan squares off with rivals Junction City at MHS on senior night and the rivalry lives on. Manhattan recognized four senior wrestlers, Bryant Salas, Ben DeJesus, Sampson Jimenez and Damian Ilalio for their hard work and dedication to MHS wrestling.
There were multiple story lines in this dual, Manhattan trying to revenge last years loss to JC. Picking up a win for coach Robert Gonzales over his son Tyler while Robert recovers from hip surgery and will Easton Taylor score a win to make 100 high school career wins.
Both teams had open weights, Manhattan at 106# and JC at 285#, so the battle lies between those weights. Junction City scores first at 113# with Zach Petrusky getting a 8-1 decision over Manhattans Jantzen Borge. At 120 Jameal Agnew for Manhattan gets a close 6-5 decision over Kayden Blake. Patrick Foxworth for JC gets a major decision 13-0 over Landon Brunner.
The Manhattan parents get electric as Easton Taylor steps on the mat looking for win 100. This match started out tough for Taylor as he gave up a couple takedowns in the match but as the match wore on Taylor took control and ended it with a pin. The parents flashed sheets of paper with 100 on them, at this point JC lead the team score 13-9.
Manhattan took the lead 15-13 when Tucker Brunner at 138# pins Jamie Villanueva. Blaisen Bammes meets up with CJ Neuman of JC after Bammes beat Neuman at the Centenial league tournament. This was a tight match and Bammes wins by a 2-0 decision. Devin Siebert scrapped with Griffin Bohanan of JC but unfortunately on a slip by Siebert, Bohanan gets Siebert on his back and wins by fall and regaining the lead 19-18 in favor of Junction City.
Saben Williams at 160# for Manhattan battled Jose Padilla with under 30 seconds in the match Williams gets a pin and Manhattan takes the lead again. At 170 Jaxon Vikander stepped on the mat for the tribe and gets a major decision 13-1 over Logan Nabus and extends Manhattan’s lead 28-19
Junction City storms back getting three wins at 182, 195 and 220 by decision and two pins respectively and retook the lead by six. With JC not having a 285 pounder Damian Ilalio gets 6 points for Manhattan and appropriately ties the team scores at 34.
After the refs, coaches and score table went through the rule book, criteria#9 is the deciding factor. What team scores first in each individual match, Manhattan scored first 8 times and Junction City scored four time. MANHATTAN WINS on criteria 35-34.
