Waggoner Leads Comets to Win Over Rockets

The Chanute Blue Comets girls’ basketball team hosted the Rose Hill Rockets on Friday. Chanute won 44-38. Camyrrn Yardlev gave the Rockets 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Brianna Waggoner led the Comets with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 3-pointers made.

“Bri was huge tonight for us. Time and time again, she stepped up and hit it, That’s what you need from a senior. I’m really proud of her and we needed it,” Chanute’s head coach Dustin Fox said.

I would like to say that this low-scoring contest was due to stellar defense on both sides, however it is more of a sloppy game. Rose Hill had 17 turnovers to Chanute’s 16.

“Good teams win games when they don’t play well. We didn’t shoot the ball well and we still found a way to win. So, I was really proud of them,” Fox said.

The game started off fast paced but with little scoring. Chanute came out with a press defense that while being broken quite often, Rose Hill wasn’t really scoring.

“When we watched the film, they really struggled with pressure. They really did a good job of handling that tonight than what we saw on film. So, what we came in planning to do wasn’t working, and they were getting layup opportunity after layup opportunity and we were scrambling the whole time,” Fox said, “We were really fortunate to not be down more than we were. We switched it up, went to our 1-3-1 zone, and that really helped. We were able to get out and get some touches, get some deflections and hold them at bay even though we weren’t hitting the ball well ourselves.”

The second quarter was better with Chaute pulling out to a 22-14 lead. Waggoner dropped 4 points and Kori Babcock put in 5 points in the quarter. Chanute held the lead throughout the second half taking the win 44-38.

“I thought that we were tough. It wasn’t pretty; there was nothing about tonight that was pretty. Other than Bri, we really struggled to shoot the ball and it was kind of a grind it out type of game,” Fox said, “I just thought we were really tough, on the boards, defensively, we got the stops we needed to get, and we’ll get better at executing down the stretch. We made it a little bit hard on ourselves down the stretch.”
