The Chanute Blue Comets and the Paola Panthers competed in postseason action on Monday. Despite the bad weather conditions, Chanute won 1-0 behind a goal from junior Kaleb Becannon.
“It was a weird day. We just fought through the elements well. First half we looked really really really good and we got a goal and in the second half we played well enough to not give them a goal,” Wilcox said.
In Chanute the weather conditions were not ideal for soccer. A layer of ice coated the field and would get crushed up throughout the game. The Comets dominated in time of possession in the first half and Becannon capitalized in the 36th minute for the only goal of the game.
“I think [the weather] contributed a ton to the game. Neither team could really do what they wanted. There were just missed plays every 15 seconds. It was just ice, so it was either slick and the ball was flying or it was broken up and the ball wouldn’t move at all,” Wilcox said.
Paola spent most of the second half in their attacking third. However sophomore Xander Weilert and junior goalkeeper Drayton Cleaver helped keep the sheet clean in the win.
“Our back line did really well of not giving them any good chances. Drayton played really well and Xander played really well. We did just enough to win,” Wilcox said.
Chanute will move on to face Louisburg tomorrow in their second playoff matchup of the year. Last season the Comets made it to a second game but were unable to go any further.
“I think Louisburg is a fairly good team, but we can be a good team too,”
