As is the case with many 8-Man football teams in the state of Kansas, participation numbers are critical for Wakefield High School football. The Bombers list five returning starters this season. All of which are two-way starters.
“This will be a challenging year with our numbers,” said Wakefield head coach Chris Freeman. “We will have fewer young men out this year so it will be absolutely crucial to remain healthy throughout the season.”
The Bombers need to replace three team leaders due to graduation, including All-League and All-District standout Jack Krueger.
On the line, seniors Colten Drake and Konner Murphy return for Wakefield. The pair enter the season listed over six feet tall and combine for 445 lbs.
At skills positions are senior Alec Vann, 6’1″ 180 lbs along with juniors Shaun Hoofard and Trevor Uken. Vann is expected to run the Bombers offense at quarterback while defending the secondary on defense. Hoofard joins Vann in defending the secondary with Vann and taking hand offs from the quarterback. Uken balances out Hoofard in the backfield while playing linebacker on defense.
“We have to stay healthy,” said the Bombers head coach. “If we do, I am excited about the chance we have each time we take the field.”
The district schedule for 2020 shakes out favorably for Wakefield football. Three of the Bombers five district games are played at home. However, the competition increases over last year with the addition of Lebo.
“As a whole, I think our district may be tougher this year as Hartford returns most of their team,” commented coach Freeman. “Waverly leaves our district, but Lebo takes their place. Those are both really solid teams so we didn’t get softer with our district teams.”
The Wakefield Bombers begin the 2020 season on the road at Bennington on Friday, September 4th, 2020.
