A 78-member KSHSAA Board of Directors voted to approve the “COVID Alternative Schedule” proposal by a vote of 45-29.
The KSHSAA Executive Board approved unanimously earlier this week the proposal.
The alternative schedule would allow fall sports competition to continue into the spring season if a school cancels its’ fall activities due to COVID-19 related issues.
Schools that opt to participate in the alternative schedule will not be eligible for state playoffs for fall activities and there would not be a “Spring-Fall State Playoffs” to crown a champion.
An amendment to the proposal moves class 4A from the “5-6A Band” to the the “3-2-1A Band”. Over half of the schools in a band must opt-out for the alternative schedule to take effect.
A motion carried, as well, to add “Rule 22”. Rule 22 states, “Students may not engage in outside competition in the same sport during a season in which they are representing their school.”
The full details of the original, proposed alternative season, as well as their implications, can be found by clicking here.
EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this article misidentified “Rule 22”.
