That’s how 4th year Fredonia Yellowjackets football head coach Marc Svaty described his offense for the 2020 season.
Last year, Fredonia recorded a 4-5 season due to a young team that struggled to put together back-to-back wins.
“We had a young team and returned a lot of experience. Some of our young kids really started to play well towards the end of the season last year.”
Running the multiple scheme offense is 5’6 135 lbs. senior John Dutton.
Dutton threw for over 1,000 yards with 13 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Running the ground game for the Yellowjackets is 5’10” 180 lbs. senior Buddy Claibourn.
Claibourn rushed for 647 yards on the ground and 5 touchdowns and recorded over 100 yards rushing in 3 games last year.
Opposing linebackers and secondary players will also be busy tracking down the tough speedster in Layne Mayeske.
Mayeske contributed to 571 yards receiving last year and 5 touchdowns. He has also received plenty of looks in summer basketball.
“We return a nice mix of skill kids and linemen on offense,” said Svaty.
A more mature, experienced front offensive line should propel Fredonia over the top back into a winning season.
Senior offensive lineman Colton Appelhans, 5’9″ 225lbs., Kyler Starbuck, a senior at 6’2″ 285 lbs., Grant Hebb, a senior at 5’7″ 260 lbs., and Kellen Tindle, a junior at 5’9″ 165 lbs., all return to set lanes for the offense.
“Defensively, we will need to improve our 2019 performance. We will need to be more physical and make stops against the run game of the best teams that we will play in 2020,” said the Fredonia head coach.
Buddy Claibourn recorded 37 tackles on the defensive side of the ball for Fredonia last year. He was the 4th leading tackler from last year’s team.
Stepping up to replace the defensive departures will be 6’2″ 290 lbs. senior Andy Jamis, 230 lbs. 5’10” senior Colton Payne, and Colten Dinkel, 5’9″ 165 lbs. junior.
Fredonia’s quest for a spot in the playoffs includes match-ups with St. Mary’s Colgan, Neodesha, Erie, Riverton, and Southeast-Cherokee in the 2A District 1 for the East.
The Yellowjackets open the season at home against Caney Valley before traveling back-to-back against Tri-Valley League foes Humboldt and Cherryvale.
“I like our kids, I like my staff, we look forward to 2020.”
