DODGE CITY – The Olpe Lady Eagles take their undefeated record up against Norwich this afternoon in Dodge City at the class 1A state tournament.

It is the 29th state appearance for the program, all coming during Jesse Nelson’s 43 years at the helm. Nelson’s 925 wins are the most all-time for the state of Kansas, and his team is in search of the fourth state title (1981,2010,2011).

Olpe is led with a five guard starting lineup, with no player over 5’8”. Senior Neleh Davis and Junior Hattie Fisher are snipers from long distance on the offense side of the ball. Juniors Macy Smith, Maya Bishop, and Marley Heins has given teams fits on both sides of the ball throughout the season.

Olpe was in uncharted waters during the sub-state championship game against Berean Academy, trailing for the first time of the season late in the game, before advancing with a 56-51.

Olpe’s opponent this afternoon is the Norwich Eagles. It’s the 3rd and 6th seed matchup, with Norwich at 22-3. Olpe was defeated as a 3 seed a year ago by Hanover, 45-40.

“Given the rest of the field, I really like this pairing for us’” stated Nelson.

Norwich does have some length down low that could pose problems for the undersized Olpe team. Torrie Poe, a speedster on the wing, will run track at Fort Hays State next year.

Norwich and Olpe share one common opponent in Waverly. Norwich defeated Waverly in the sub-state semis, 42-32. Olpe defeated Waverly in the regional championship, 71-29. Olpe also defeated Waverly in the regular season 57-31.

For Olpe to earn their 19th Final Four, they will have to get off to a hot start shooting the ball and limit Norwich on the glass.

Tip-off is set for 4:45pm with audio coverage on 101.7. Click here for streaming options.
