HUMBOLDT – The Humboldt Cubs, for the 2nd week in a row, scored early and often in the 1st half to take a commanding 48-0 lead at halftime en route to a 60-14 Regional Round win over Southeast-Cherokee on Friday night.
Senior Conor Haviland had 270 total yards of offense, 214 yards on the ground and 56 yards passing, with 5 rushing touchdowns. Senior running back Cooper Jaro had 68 yards rushing along with a rushing touchdown and sophomore Gavin Page contributed with 40 yards of his own and a rushing touchdown. The Cubs outrushed the Southeast Lancers 342 yards to 263.
Southeast’s leading rusher Zaden Hendricks was held to just 120 yards on the ground while junior quarterback Bryce Petersen struggled to get into a rhythm, throwing for 50 yards on 4 completions in 14 attempts and rushing for 93 yards.
The Cubs defense also contributed with 4 turnovers, including a Gunner Elder 84 yard pick-six.
The Southeast Lancers end their season 7-3, the best finish in close to 10 years for the Lancers, in a year that saw them capture the Three Rivers League championship.
The Cubs improve to 10-0 and will travel to Seneca to battle Nemaha Central on Friday night. Nemaha Central defeated Rossville in overtime to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
