6 Coverage Area Volleyball Teams Headed To State

6 coverage area teams secure their spot to the Kansas High School Activities Association State Volleyball tournament.

Below are the teams and their classifications for the tournament that will be competing in.

The volleyball state tournament will be held on Friday, November 1st and Saturday, November 2nd.


Independence HS (33-3)

The Lady Bulldogs were the overall number one seed on the east side of the bracket. They defeated KC Piper in the opening round, after KC Piper defeated Iola in the Play-In Match-Up, by a score of 25-12, 25-11. The Lady Bulldogs secured their spot to the state tournament with a 25-18, 25-13 Sub-State Championship game over Baldwin.

Independence was ranked number 4 in Class 4A in the last Kansas Volleyball Association coaches poll. The Lady Bulldogs earned the number 2 seed and will play Topeka-Hayden, Eudora and Towanda Circle on Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Burlington HS (18-18)

The Lady Wildcats traveled to Fredonia on Saturday and played 3 straight games with only 10 minutes rest between the semi-final and championship games to claim the Fredonia 3A Volleyball Sub-State Championship. Burlington had little trouble with Cherryvale, sweeping the Lady Chargers 25-12, 25-16 in the quarterfinals. After winning the first set 25-10 over the top seed Eureka Lady Tornado, Burlington dropped the second set 22-25 and came away with the upset 25-18 in the 3rd. In the Championship game, Burlington overpowered Humboldt 25-13 in the first set and fended off a late Lady Cub rally to win the sub-state tournament in the 2nd set 25-22.

Frontenac HS (38-4)

The Lady Raiders were the host and number one seed on Saturday. Frontenac started the day with a quick win over Columbus 25-6, 25-8. Frontenac met up with Anderson County and swept the Lady Bulldogs 25-17, 25-22. The Championship game pitted Frontenac against fellow CNC member, and ranked in 3A for much of the season, Riverton. The Rams claimed the first set 26-24, but Frontenac narrowly claimed the final 2 sets by a score of 25-22 and 25-23.

Burlington will be the 8 seed in the top bracket and faceoff against top-seeded Beloit to start the day followed by a match against Cheney and then Phillipsburg to end the day. Frontenac, who was ranked 7th in the final KVA coaches poll, will be the 2 seed in the bottom bracket and face Seneca-Nemaha Central, Silver Lake and Royal Valley. St. Mary’s Colgan (41-2)

The St. Mary’s Colgan Lady Panthers, who were ranked number 1 in the final Class 2A KVA coaches poll, breezed through the Northeast-Arma Sub-State. Colgan defeated Pleasanton 25-9, 25-13 in the quarterfinals and continued that momentum by defeating Uniontown 25-13, 25-12. In the Sub-State Championship, Colgan jumped out to a big win in the first set 25-8 and held off Erie 25-19 to claim the Sub-State Championship.

Colgan is the number 1 seed in Friday’s opening day of Class 2A State Volleyball tournament. They will play Garden Plain, Smith Center and Valley Heights. For the full schedule of Class 2A times and seedings, click here.


Chetopa HS (38-5)

The Chetopa Lady Green Hornets, who only have 8 varsity players, were the number seed at the Flinthills Sub-State. In the opening round, Chetopa held off an upset bid by Southern Coffey County winning the first set 25-22 and overmatched the Lady Titans 25-7 in the 2nd set. In the Championship game, Chetopa swept Udall 25-16, 25-18.

Olpe HS (31-10)

On the opposite end, the Olpe Lady Eagles pulled off the upset to claim their spot in the state tournament. Olpe defeated Oswego 25-15, 25-17 in the semi-finals. The Lady Eagles, who were ranked 8th in the last KVA coaches poll, took on the top-seed, and 7th ranked in the state, Argonia. Olpe swept Argonia 25-16, 25-18.

Chetopa and Olpe will be on opposite brackets in Class 1A. Chetopa earned the number 2 seed and will battle Central Plains, Clifton-Clyde, and Cunninghame. In the top bracket, Olpe is the 5th seed and open play against Minneola, Rural Vista and Victoria. For the full schedule of Class 1A times and seedings, click here.
