LEON – The Cherryvale Chargers outgained Tri-Valley League rival Leon-Bluestem 248 total yards to 95 in their 42-6 league victory Friday night.

“We were able to mix the run and the pass effectively. Zaine Lantz had a huge night,” said Cherryvale’s head coach Harry Hester.

Lantz caught 4 passes on Friday night. 3 of them were hauled in for touchdown scores; a 28, 60, and 44-yard reception with 136 yards total. Lantz also rushed for 34 yards on 5 carries.

The 1st quarter set the tone for the night when Wyatt Hillman scored on a 9-yard run. The Chargers extra point attempt would fail to give the early lead to Cherryvale 6-0.

Jacobi Barnett would also score on a short run, a 7-yard scamper for the second score in the 1st quarter 2 minutes later. Gavin Hooper connected with Chet Linn on the 2-point pass play to push the lead to 14-0.

Lantz’s first score of the game came at the :26 mark when he connected from a Hooper 28 yard pass. The 2 point play failed, giving Cherryvale a 20-0 lead at the end of the 1st.

The Chargers went off in the 2nd quarter. Hooper found Linn on a short 2-yard pass to extend the Cherryvale lead. Hooper would again connect with a receiver on a 2-yard pass, this time Barnett, on convert the 2 point play putting the Chargers up 28-0.

Hooper and Lantz took control of the scoring for Cherryvale. Their first score came at the 4:09 mark with a 60-yard pass from Hooper to Lantz that finished in the endzone. Hooper connected with Linn on a short pass to convert the 2 point play extending the lead to 34-0.

With just 2 minutes before halftime, Hooper and Lantz connected again with a 44-yard touchdown pass and catch. Wyatt Gillman finished the 1st half scoring for Cherryvale with a 2-point conversion run, giving the Chargers a 42-0 lead.

Bluestem avoided the shutout with a 43-yard touchdown pass but failed on the two-point conversion. The halftime score of 42-6 would also end up being the final.

Cherryvale’s defense forced 2 fumbles, recovering them both. Bluestem ran 38 total offensive plays while being held to 95 yards by the Charger defense.

Gavin Hooper completed 8 of 14 passes with 176 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. Hooper’s favorite target Friday night Zaine Lantz led the team with 4 receptions for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Cherryvale (1-1, 1-1) will travel to Erie (1-1, 1-1). The Red Devils were victorious over the Neodesha Bluestreaks in a tight Tri-Valley League contest. Leon-Bluestem (0-2, 0-2) travels to Fredonia (1-1, 1-1), who lost to Humboldt on Friday.
