Burlington Wildcats open the season with a 46-20 win on the road at Council Grove Friday night. The Braves ground out a 67-yard drive using 7 minutes off the clock after taking the opening kickoff to take an 8-0 lead.
The Wildcats matched that 67-yard drive to tie the score on the first play of the second quarter. Burlington recovers a Braves fumble at the 40 and goes in to take a 14-8.
Burlington’s low screaming kickoff bounces off of a Braves front liner and the Cats recover the loose ball. Five plays and 46 yards later, the Cats are in for another score. Council Grove answers with an 89-yard drive narrow the score to 28-14.
In the final three minutes of the half, Burlington drives 58 yards for another score and intercepts the Braves pass leading to another score and a 34-14 halftime lead.
Receiving the second-half kickoff, Senior Cael Johnson runs seven yards on his first carry of the drive and follows up with a 60 yard romp into the end zone for his fourth TD and 147 yard performance for the night.
Braden Sloyer adds his third TD of the night to stretch the lead to 46-14 with 5:35 remaining in the 3rd.
The Braves add one more score to post a final 46-20.
