2019 season preview: With a large core of upperclassmen returning for Southeast, the expectations heading into the upcoming season are higher than they have ever been during head coach Jerrad Hansen’s time with the program. Look for the Lancers to grind teams down with their ground attack and punishing defense as they vie for a league championship and a repeat trip to the playoffs.

* League Opponent / # District Game
Biggest game of 2019: @Pleasanton. As evident by the preseason coaches poll, many believe that the Lancers could take a step forward in 2019 and win the Three Rivers League in their second season since merging. However, in order for that to come to fruition this upperclassmen laden team must first knock off the reigning champions Pleasanton. A season ago this was a low scoring slug-fest with the Blu-Jays coming out on top 8-0. Whichever team wins this contest will have the inside track to winning the TRL.
Eastern Kansas Sports — What was the highlight of the 2018 season for you and your football program?
Jerrad Hansen — “The best part was learning to compete and win some football games. We also made the playoffs for the first time in ten years.”
SEK — What did you learn last season that you will bring into the upcoming season?
JH — “We learned that we can win and what it takes to take the next step.”
SEK — What players within your football program will you look to for leadership?
JH — “I have a great core of upperclassmen coming back that all have had plenty of varsity experience and I expect all of them to take turns leading and setting the tone.”
SEK — Heading into the season what do you believe are your team strengths?
JH — “Experience will be a great strength. We only graduated three seniors off of the team from last year and return the bulk majority of our starters who most of which have been three year starters. I also believe that we will have good numbers this year that will give us some depth at all of our positions. We also have worked hard in the weight room and have increased in physical strength so we should be able to run the football effectively.”
SEK — What will be the biggest change for your team heading into the 2019 season.
JH — “The biggest change will be the loss of three four-year starters.”
SEK — What are your main goals for the upcoming season?
JH — “My goals are for us to work hard and compete every single week and every single day. We have to work and take it one day at a time in order to be successful.”
